Careers Masterclass - TED talk by Medical Mavericks

The MV Hall was packed for the Careers Masterclass by Medical Mavericks during today’s NSI period. Medical Mavericks are described as one of the UK’s No 1 providers of Careers, STEM and Sports Science enrichment experience for schools.

This latest masterclass in our Careers and STEM programme was specifically designed for pupils considering a career in medicine, biomedical science, healthcare science, medical engineering, medical physics, physiology, dentistry or sports science.

Over 160 pupils from Year 7, 9-13 had requested to attend the talk and were completely engrossed during the session. Short video clips of various physiological tests that the consultant presenter had recorded, caused quite a stir as the pupils watched a camera being inserted into his lung and a sample of lung tissues taken. The interactive nature of the presentation resulted in two of our pupils being tested for growth; they were very pleased to be told they would in fact grow taller, even though one pupil only had another year of growth left! At the end of the talk one Sixth Former commented that he thought the talk was ‘brilliant’.

At the same time, our Year 8 pupils were taking part in an E-Safety talk with Megan Brickland, Digital Community Support Officer from Merseyside Police.
