Recycling Projects Update

Bottle Tops

After only two weeks of 7 Selwyn’s and the Eco Committee promoting the Liverpool College Recycling Project, our Bottle Top collection has reached over 1700 already. The target is easily going to be surpassed at this rate and it is hoped that this can be achieved by half term. The project is going to be run until Easter so it gives everyone an opportunity to continue collecting them. A target of 5000 is what we would ideally like to aim for.

The bottle tops will be recycled by melting and shredding them down to form new plastic materials that pupils can use when manufacturing their design work. Plastic bottle tops from milk bottles, pop bottles and juice bottles can all be donated.

Please ask your child to drop them in the recycling boxes in the reception area of Pre Prep and Prep School and also in MV13 and C5 where they will be collated. There will also be a collection point in Godwyn House for the 6th Form.

Eco Bottles

Eco Bottles should be filled at home before being brought into the school drop off points. These take a while to fill, and pieces of plastic wrapping must be cut into small pieces before being put in the 2 litre bottles. In a small space of time we have reached double figures but we will need a lot more if our Forest School is going to make use of them. Please remember that plastic wrapping should be clean.

Eco bottles are a way of collecting plastic which cannot be recycled (sweet wrappers, crisp packets, clean food packaging etc.).

• Responding to real life business briefs/ client scenario
• Learning about the different careers at KPMG and what role would best suit them.
• Networking with KMPG volunteers offering insight into what it’s like to work at the company
• Pitching to an audience

They finished the day pitching to Coca Cola about a way of recycling their products and improving sustainability. The students all engaged and really enjoyed the day. Students also had the opportunity to speak to the KPMG mentors about securing apprenticeships and employment.

Y8 football team return to form with win versus Gateacre School.

On Tuesday evening, Mr Heeley passed on the startling news that the Y8 football team had been soundly beaten on their travels, their first loss since the team formed in Y7. On Thursday, the Y8s had a quick opportunity to put things right versus local rivals Gateacre School and they didn't disappoint.

The match started evenly balanced as both teams tried to gain the upper hand in a congested midfield. As the match drifted towards half time with no real chances Harry H burst onto a loose ball and powered through to place the ball into the corner of the net. The second half started with the College full of confidence and Harry H doubled the lead to score his second of the match. Some fine saves from both goalkeepers and a penalty save from the Gateacre goalkeeper meant the game ended 2-0 to Liverpool College. This was a fine battling display from the home team.

Player of the Match Harry H - Two goals capped off a fine performance

Prep School Forensics Workshop

All pupils from Y3 and Y5 were given the opportunity to work as real detectives on Tuesday when they participated in a forensics workshop.

The pupils were given a demonstration about how science works in the real world. As they came into the Prep School, they were faced with crime tape. The school dog had been dognapped!

Fortunately, the perpetrator of the crime had left behind some clues. The pupils had to practise their science and investigative skills in a real life context - observing, exploring and asking questions - to piece together the evidence. Clues and evidence were identified, collected, interpreted and analysed. These include fingerprints, impressions, hairs and fibres and 'blood', bones and DNA. The pupils were highly engaged in the task and learnt a great deal about the real life work of forensic scientists. Well done Prep detectives. Our thanks to Mrs Doran for organising the event and to the Wilton Trust for their financial help that made the workshop possible.

Creative Arts Masterclass

Creative students participated in a superb event last week when award winning body artist, Rebecca Fuller, came into the school to deliver a talk, and even a practical demonstration.

Rebecca started her career in 'Events', quickly progressing to a Senior Events Manager in charge of organizing festivals and corporate events in America. After moving to England, Rebecca became a stay at home mum. After she began helping out at PTA events face painting, Rebecca explained how she decided this creative profession would be one worth pursuing. Through practising regularly at home, volunteering to support local events and enrolling in training courses, Rebecca soon began to develop her skills. Five years later, Rebecca began competing in Regional, and then National competitions. Rebecca also became involved in Body Art Exhibitions and competitions and quickly developed into an award winning artist. This year, Rebecca has been selected to represent the UK in the World Body Art Championships 2020.

What was incredibly inspirational about Rebecca's talk was her message that she has achieved such a superb standard in her profession through continual practice, volunteering her services to enable her to learn from more established artists, team work and through sheer passion for the creative arts. Rebecca also works free of charge for children's charities including 'Supershoes'. Her passion, dedication and enthusiasm was truly inspirational and showed how it is possible to combine creativity with ambition to become an award winning artist. We wish Rebecca every success in the World Championships this year.

An Unbeaten Morning of Sport for Liverpool College

Last Saturday, over one hundred Liverpool College pupils were again involved in Saturday sport.

Whilst the Year 7 and 8 girls entertained Birkenhead School at Hockey, the Y7 and 1st XI Football teams entertained Queen Elizabeth Grammar School from Blackburn. There were also three other year groups in action as the Y8 Y9 Y10 Football teams travelled away to play our hosts from Blackburn.

On a sunny morning, the Hockey was the first sport to start, and there were many cheers from the Liverpool College pupils and families that could be heard on the football fields as the goals kept flying in. The College were the triumphant winners in both Y7 and Y8 matches.

Next it was the turn of the U12s and 1st XI football teams. The U12s have made an unbeaten start to the term and this match proved to be their most difficult opposition so far. The College started brightly and dominated early proceedings and were rewarded for that dominance through a goal from Lorik L. Eventually, the visitors grew into the game and it needed two stunning saves from Y6 goalkeeper Layton N to keep QEGS from equalizing. As the game drifted into the final fifteen minutes and the scores locked at 1-1, the College found their thrust which they had in abundance earlier on in the match and within two minutes the College had scored two quick fire goals through Lorik L and Joshua B to make it 3-1. A mistake at the back meant QEGS pulled one back, but it was not enough to stop the U12s make it five matches unbeaten this term. As the boys walked back to the Pavilion the news was that the 1st XI had recorded their third win of the term winning by one goal to nil.

A quick phone call to the Liverpool College staff at Blackburn delivered the news that all Liverpool College teams were also the victors on their travels.

An excellent morning of sport for Liverpool College and an unbeaten one.

Liverpool College Sport in Winning Form

On Thursday, a number of sports teams were in action for both boys and girls and they didn't disappoint.

Firstly, the U15 Hockey team participated in a County Tournament at Wyncote versus a number of local schools. The College dominance of Merseyside Hockey at U15 level continued as the girls were crowned County Winners.

Meanwhile at the College, the U12 and U13 Football teams were at home versus Gateacre and Childwall. As the school has increased in size in terms of pupil numbers, this has enabled our football teams to be competitive against other footballing state schools in Merseyside. The Y7s triumphed 8-1 and the Y8s 6-1.

Finally, it was time for Netball at Calderstones School with the Y7 and Y8 teams. The results were never in doubt as Liverpool College dominated proceedings at both year groups winning by large margins.

Many congratulations to all pupils who participated.
