U13 Rugby trip to Worcester

The U13 Rugby team recently travelled to Worcester for a two day Rugby trip. The trip consisted of a well fought match versus Bredon Hill Academy Middle School, evening meal in a nearby restaurant whilst staying in a hotel within the city centre. The pupils were praised for their good behaviour and excellent manners. We look forward to a return trip to Worcester in the new year.

Liverpool Schools’ Parliament

This year, we have six Year 9 pupils representing Liverpool College at the Schools’ Parliament. I have had the pleasure to accompany these pupils to two Upper House meetings at the Town Hall where they have taken part in a Meet the Decision Makers event and a European Youth Parliament debate.

During October half term, three of our pupils put themselves forward to be a Youth Mayor and all gave rousing speeches to the council chamber that they should be proud of! Harry D (Y9 Selwyn’s) was voted in as Young Mayor and has numerous events to attend in the coming months.

Last week, we all attended a meeting to discuss How to Make Liverpool a Safe City and found out how our pupils can contribute to Liverpool's bid to become a UNICEF Child Friendly City. Our pupils have all spoken and have been involved in healthy and stirring debates in the chamber on gang culture, climate change, knife crime and youth services and have done so with confidence and pride; we look forward to more meeting in the new year.

Ghost-Writing Workshop with Seth Burkett

Year 8 pupils were extremely lucky on Wednesday to receive a talk and writing masterclass from award winning author Seth Burkett. Seth is an ex professional footballer who rose to fame as the only British player playing football in Brazil. He combined his passion for football with his love of writing to pen his first book based on his experiences called 'A Boy from Brazil'. At only 22 years of age, Seth became the youngest person ever to win the British Sports Book of the year award. More recently, Seth has become a ghostwriter for some of the world's biggest You Tube stars, Woody, Klieny and even the Singing Dentist.

The lucky Year 8 pupils received a masterclass in how to become a ghostwriter themselves - learning the questioning, interview and note-taking skills required. The pupils then applied these techniques to enable them to become ghostwriters themselves. The pupils found Seth's fascinating life story and subsequent workshops to be wonderfully inspiring, teaching them about a genre of writing very few has previously even been aware of. Copies of Seth's books are now available in the school library.

Y9 Arts Careers Visit to LJMU

Last Friday, a group of 35 Gifted and Talented artists from Year 9 were given the opportunity to attend an Arts Careers event at LJMU. We learnt that outside of London the North West is the biggest employer in the creative industries in the UK and experimented in the FabLab with future art technologies.

The art trip was such an inspiring experience and I felt very grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend. It opened my eyes to different concepts of art and the many ways in which people interpret their vision. It gave me a lot of encouragement to pursue a career in art.

Competition Success

Congratulations to our librarian Ms Shepherd who has won a prize for the library through her literary skills at phrase making.
A Halloween themed competition asked librarians across the country to submit a line about the spookiest book in their library.
Ms Shepherd's ingenious response: "Our sixth form students sink their teeth in to Bram Stoker's Dracula with great enthusiasm" was the national secondary winner. Her prize is our gain in the form of several new horror fiction books.
