Prep School Forensics Workshop

All pupils from Y3 and Y5 were given the opportunity to work as real detectives on Tuesday when they participated in a forensics workshop.

The pupils were given a demonstration about how science works in the real world. As they came into the Prep School, they were faced with crime tape. The school dog had been dognapped!

Fortunately, the perpetrator of the crime had left behind some clues. The pupils had to practise their science and investigative skills in a real life context - observing, exploring and asking questions - to piece together the evidence. Clues and evidence were identified, collected, interpreted and analysed. These include fingerprints, impressions, hairs and fibres and 'blood', bones and DNA. The pupils were highly engaged in the task and learnt a great deal about the real life work of forensic scientists. Well done Prep detectives. Our thanks to Mrs Doran for organising the event and to the Wilton Trust for their financial help that made the workshop possible.

Creative Arts Masterclass

Creative students participated in a superb event last week when award winning body artist, Rebecca Fuller, came into the school to deliver a talk, and even a practical demonstration.

Rebecca started her career in 'Events', quickly progressing to a Senior Events Manager in charge of organizing festivals and corporate events in America. After moving to England, Rebecca became a stay at home mum. After she began helping out at PTA events face painting, Rebecca explained how she decided this creative profession would be one worth pursuing. Through practising regularly at home, volunteering to support local events and enrolling in training courses, Rebecca soon began to develop her skills. Five years later, Rebecca began competing in Regional, and then National competitions. Rebecca also became involved in Body Art Exhibitions and competitions and quickly developed into an award winning artist. This year, Rebecca has been selected to represent the UK in the World Body Art Championships 2020.

What was incredibly inspirational about Rebecca's talk was her message that she has achieved such a superb standard in her profession through continual practice, volunteering her services to enable her to learn from more established artists, team work and through sheer passion for the creative arts. Rebecca also works free of charge for children's charities including 'Supershoes'. Her passion, dedication and enthusiasm was truly inspirational and showed how it is possible to combine creativity with ambition to become an award winning artist. We wish Rebecca every success in the World Championships this year.

An Unbeaten Morning of Sport for Liverpool College

Last Saturday, over one hundred Liverpool College pupils were again involved in Saturday sport.

Whilst the Year 7 and 8 girls entertained Birkenhead School at Hockey, the Y7 and 1st XI Football teams entertained Queen Elizabeth Grammar School from Blackburn. There were also three other year groups in action as the Y8 Y9 Y10 Football teams travelled away to play our hosts from Blackburn.

On a sunny morning, the Hockey was the first sport to start, and there were many cheers from the Liverpool College pupils and families that could be heard on the football fields as the goals kept flying in. The College were the triumphant winners in both Y7 and Y8 matches.

Next it was the turn of the U12s and 1st XI football teams. The U12s have made an unbeaten start to the term and this match proved to be their most difficult opposition so far. The College started brightly and dominated early proceedings and were rewarded for that dominance through a goal from Lorik L. Eventually, the visitors grew into the game and it needed two stunning saves from Y6 goalkeeper Layton N to keep QEGS from equalizing. As the game drifted into the final fifteen minutes and the scores locked at 1-1, the College found their thrust which they had in abundance earlier on in the match and within two minutes the College had scored two quick fire goals through Lorik L and Joshua B to make it 3-1. A mistake at the back meant QEGS pulled one back, but it was not enough to stop the U12s make it five matches unbeaten this term. As the boys walked back to the Pavilion the news was that the 1st XI had recorded their third win of the term winning by one goal to nil.

A quick phone call to the Liverpool College staff at Blackburn delivered the news that all Liverpool College teams were also the victors on their travels.

An excellent morning of sport for Liverpool College and an unbeaten one.

Liverpool College Sport in Winning Form

On Thursday, a number of sports teams were in action for both boys and girls and they didn't disappoint.

Firstly, the U15 Hockey team participated in a County Tournament at Wyncote versus a number of local schools. The College dominance of Merseyside Hockey at U15 level continued as the girls were crowned County Winners.

Meanwhile at the College, the U12 and U13 Football teams were at home versus Gateacre and Childwall. As the school has increased in size in terms of pupil numbers, this has enabled our football teams to be competitive against other footballing state schools in Merseyside. The Y7s triumphed 8-1 and the Y8s 6-1.

Finally, it was time for Netball at Calderstones School with the Y7 and Y8 teams. The results were never in doubt as Liverpool College dominated proceedings at both year groups winning by large margins.

Many congratulations to all pupils who participated.

Y9 Science and Technology Competition National Final

Liverpool College was awarded Third place in the NW Science and Technology National competition this week. Emily T and Liam D were awarded a trophy from the Lord Mayor of Manchester for their superb accomplishment, beating thousands of students who had taken part in the competition.

When we arrived at the venue, a professor from Manchester University gave an introductory talk on the history of robotics and what technology is being pioneered at the university. The pupils then formed a team with two from another school to take part in a computer programming challenge using Lego mindstorms Robotics. The teams had to program a robot to navigate a maze and react in certain ways when it came to a wall or different colours. This tested their perseverance skills as it required a lot of checking to see if the robot was performing the correct task. In the previous seven years of the challenge only two teams had ever made it successfully around the maze; this year four did!

After the robot challenge, the students had to give a short presentation on what they had learnt and where they felt the future of robotics lay. The day concluded with an award ceremony with the trophy presentations awarded by Lord Mayor of Manchester. A massive well done to Emily and Liam for their superb accomplishment.

Year 9 STEM day at Liverpool University

Year 9 Wilton Scholars enjoyed a superb day at Liverpool University this week, participating in a variety of STEM workshops at an undergraduate level. The pupils enjoyed lessons in archaeology, chemistry, computing and engineering, using the superb facilities at the Liverpool Central Laboratories and within the state of the art Engineering centre. The incredibly challenging tasks included using a £60,000 scanning electron microscope to analyse dichroic glass uncovered from archaeological sites, using molecular gastronomy techniques to create analytical chemistry beads and soldering circuits to make radio frequency detectors, to identify hidden ‘listening bugs’ planted around the room.

The students all thoroughly enjoyed the event and were enthused by the broad spectrum of STEM events in offer. Our thanks to Mrs Doran for organising the trip and to all the staff at Liverpool University for making the workshop so interactive and engaging.

Liverpool College Maths Team

Four able mathematicians from Year 6 did a sensational job of representing Liverpool College in the National NYMA Maths championships this week. The all boys team had to complete rather complex lateral thinking challenges and then present their findings. They did an exceptional job and we are very proud of them all. We will find out in two weeks if they were successful in reaching the regional finals. Good luck!
