First weeks of Teacher Training

One of our School Direct trainees, Ms Kennedy, provides a glimpse into life as a trainee teacher at Liverpool College:

The School Direct programme is already proving to be a rewarding, engaging and challenging route to the teaching profession. From our involvement in the whole school INSET activities to being paired with a House Form and joining in with extra-curricular activities, we have been fully immersed in the learning with character culture of Liverpool College from the off. The subject mentoring system ensures we have support throughout from an experienced authority, providing not only formal guidance but an understanding forum for discussion when challenges arise. Initial observations have served to inspire and inform our progress, underpinned by study conducted at Hope University; introducing us to key theoretical thought and learning practices. Any beginner's nerves are assuaged by a personalised approach to your teaching, working at your own pace and building momentum as you feel comfortable.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few weeks on the programme and feel that the immersive nature, supportive framework and self-motivated learning central to the program are helping me to develop a key skill set for future success as a teacher.

Welcome to our new Boarders

Welcome to our new Year 12 boarding students who were geared up and ready for combat this weekend when they went Paintballing at Knowsley Safari Park.

In addition to students from the UK, our boarders also come from a range of European countries such as Spain, Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, Latvia and Lithuania and are settling into life at Liverpool College, learning how to live semi-independently while studying 3 or 4 A levels in a foreign language, that is, English! We hope to see them taking their full part in the vast array of sports, arts and CCF opportunities the College has to offer as they become an integral part of the College community.

Boarders House Football

Our boarders took the house competition spirit into the weekend with an indoor house football match on Sunday evening.

There were house points to be won as each student that scored a goal claimed 3 points for their house.

After a fantastic effort by all the participants, the final house points scoreboard for the match was:

Brook’s – 24 House Points
School – 18
Howard’s – 9
Selwyn’s – 6
Howson’s – 3

1st XV advance in the NatWest Vase

The first team travelled to local rivals St Edwards for the first round of the NatWest Vase Competition on Wednesday afternoon. St Edwards took an early 3-0 lead (penalty) against the run of play but Liverpool replied in forceful fashion, driving over a maul from a well-executed line out play. Vice-captain Rhys H (Howson’s) was on hand at the back of the maul to place the ball down over the line. Liverpool dominated the first half and very rarely did St Edwards venture into Liverpool’s half. A second try soon came about, when attacking wide play ended up with Chris F (School) being tackled high, just before he would have touched down for a try, resulting in the referee awarding a penalty try.

Half Time 3-12

It was a similar start with the 2nd half, Liverpool dominating especially at the set piece. Another try soon came about after good handling skills, Pieter B (Brook’s) finishing off in the corner. Credit to St Edwards as they showed lots of determination and started to play some good rugby. Against the run of play, Captain Adam M (Howson’s) found a small gap and capitalised to go over for another try. Tiredness and a change in personnel (due to injury) gave St Edwards confidence to play attacking rugby and they scored two tries in quick succession. Penalties and silly tactical errors from Liverpool, enabled St Edwards the opportunity to camp in Liverpool’s half and another drive over the line put St Edwards within one try, with two minutes to play. Liverpool held out to secure in the end, a narrow 26-32 victory. A very pleasing first half but plenty room for improvement for the boys (including fitness) in the next few weeks.

Pre Prep Officially Open!

We were delighted to welcome Mayor Joe Anderson OBE and Cllr Barbara Murray (Cabinet Member for Education) to the College today to officially open the new Pre Prep building.

In addition to ‘cutting the ribbon’, Mayor Anderson and other guests, including members of the Liverpool College Foundation and Governing Body, had the opportunity to tour the new facilities, speak to staff and pupils and see them “in action” in their new classrooms.

All our visitors were impressed with the purpose, passion and challenge they saw in the learning taking place and in the pride our pupils had in their work and in their school.

Upcoming PTA Events

The PTA plays a vital role in the school community and all parents and carers are automatically members. The PTA is primarily about raising funds to provide facilities and equipment which support the school and advance the education of all pupils, but through our fundraising activities we develop good relationships, and friendships, between parents and staff, and also have a lot of fun!

Annual PTA Wine Tasting Evening (Friday 21 September, 7.30-10.30pm, Dining Room)

All parents are invited to the PTA’s first event of the school year - the wine tasting quiz.

All offers of raffle prizes gratefully received.

Everyone is welcome to a night of fine wine, and fabulous company with a prize for the most discerning palate!

AGM (Wednesday 26 September, 7pm, Dining Room)

One of the main purposes of the AGM is for parents to elect the PTA Committee for the forthcoming year. Our school has grown substantially in recent years and to reflect this we are asking more parents to step forward to elected roles. The main roles and their core purpose are:

• Chair – provide leadership, make all members welcome, set the agenda and ensure the committee fulfils it’s role.
• Secretary – Organise meetings, take minutes and distribute, keep accurate records.
• Treasurer – Manage accounts and financial records.
• Communication – maintaining and developing website, social media and publicity.

In addition to these elected committee members, we need 8 elected ordinary members, as School Reps. These should be 2 from Pre prep, 2 from Prep, 2 from Years 7-9 and 2 from Years 10-13. The roles will include organising school relevant events (such as discos), engaging with parent volunteers and relevant staff.
