Mash Up at the Unity Theatre

On Thursday 14 February, a small group of Year 9 Expressive Arts pupils had the pleasure of watching a performance known as “Mash Up” at the Unity Theatre in town. Involved in the performance were: singers, puppetry and mime, beat boxers, and spoken word artists. Also at the end of the night there was an open mic which was open to anyone in the audience and one of our own pupils, Lucy C, sang a brilliant cover of Shallow from A Star is Born

The night was fabulous, and gave the pupils an insight to different creative ways of performing. Thank you very much to Miss McWatt, Mrs Hall and Mr Bishop for organising it!

U11 Netball Success

On Wednesday 13 February, the U11 A and B netball teams played St Pius away. We had a fantastic afternoon of sport and all the girls thoroughly enjoyed two very competitive matches.

The U11 A team came away with their biggest win of the season at 7-4 with some fantastic goal scoring by Lena A and Aurelie O. The U11 B team had a brilliant match with a great win of 9-4. A special mention must go to Grace M, Anya C and Holly W for their shooting skills. I was very proud of the girls’ sportsmanship and their clear love of the game! A successful afternoon all round!

A big thank you to Miss McLindon for all her help with training and umpiring. I’m looking forward to our next fixture!

Y10 Sustainable Fashion Workshop with International Designer

A number of Y10 GCSE art pupils took part in a Palm House site visit, creative workshop and lecture with Patrick McDowell, an international designer who has worked with Rita Ora, Lady Gaga and M.I.A and who specialises in developing sustainable fashion.

The pupils reported back on their experience:

“I really enjoyed the workshop I thought it was a really good experience to work with a professional artist. It was exciting to see his work as this was an area we have yet to cover. I enjoyed working with others designing and he gave us lots of advice and tips on careers in the fashion industry. Working in the palm house was good to try landscape drawing and use this to link into fashion ideas later that day. It was great to use the palm house cuttings to create and recycle materials.” Rosa A.

“The workshop was fun working with natural materials from the palm house. We learnt new drawing techniques especially when drawing from observation. We tried blind drawing techniques which was challenging and new. A good experience.” Safea A R

“I really liked the structure of the day, collecting research, drawing and gathering ideas. I enjoyed working with others in groups. A unique opportunity.” Alex R

“It was good to recycle materials to create fashion. We received lots of tips and careers advice too, in order to help with our future plans”. Bethany W

“I liked seeing a new artist and their perspective and their style of art and I enjoyed doing a new type of art. Getting out of the class, it made me feel that I wanted to do more work - I got inspiration and wanted to excel. To think about art for a full day was brilliant.” Jude PC

Striking A Pose - Boarding’s Best Bowlers Turn Up the Heat

It was hot competition between Boarding’s best bowlers on Sunday as 12 of them played the best of 3 games at the Hive bowling alley in Widnes. Would it be birthday boy Gabriel, alley wizards Adrian and Anton or Milan the Moldovan strike Maestro who would prevail?

Top score went to Milan with Anton a close runner up. There were gracious acknowledgements of defeat and plenty of smiles from everyone else who enjoyed the fun day out.

U12 Football Team - Seven Games Unbeaten

The U12s football team are on a terrific run of form this term, and on Saturday the College recorded a six nil win versus Ellesmere College to record their fifth win of the term and remain unbeaten in seven matches.

There are many partnerships forming in the team as the matches progress, and what is most pleasing is the defence, starting with the goalkeeper who is the catalyst of many attacks rolling the ball out to the left or right to start an attack which leaves the opposition having difficulty trying to keep up with play. The counter pressing of the team is an impressive sight as the team work in twos, to try and win the ball back as quickly as possible and attack the opposition with blistering pace. We look forward to seeing the College progress further after the half term break.
