U15 Girls Indoor Cricket Tournament Triumph

The 1st XV rugby team have had some of their best performances and results for many years this academic year, and this has largely been down to the brilliance of coach Mr Heeley who has put on many constructive training sessions and has passionately inspired the team from the sidelines on a Saturday morning. Whilst Mr Heeley is still coaching the rugby team, he is also coaching the cricket teams and was rewarded on Friday morning for his efforts as the Liverpool College U15 girls indoor cricket team progressed to the regional finals by convincingly beating St Hilda’s, King David and Gateacre. Mr Heeley reports all the girls’ performances with bat, ball and in the field enabled the College to dominate all three matches.

Many congratulations to all involved and the team of: Francesca K, Jen G, Bella W, Gabby E, Kate B, Grace AE, Katie L, Chloe H, Lucia A, Libby H, Sadie T.

Y7 Boys in First Competitive Hockey Match for Liverpool College

On Wednesday, a group of Y7 boys met hockey coach Miss Arnold at lunchtime to play their first ever hockey match versus Scarisbrick Hall School. The excitement from the boys was evident throughout the day and they didn't disappoint, putting on two fantastic team performances versus a school who have already experienced a number of matches.

It was fantastic to see the boys put on their hockey gear and pick up a hockey stick ready to do battle versus another school. We look forward to another hockey match for the Y7 boys.

Y5 and Y6 Business Enterprise Challenge

On Saturday 2 February, Liverpool College was proud to host an event for More Able pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 from across the North West. The event, called ‘Business Enterprise’ was specifically devised to stimulate young entrepreneurs and challenge them to think creatively. Participating pupils were first asked to design a series of innovative new products. They were then challenged to make prototypes, identify their consumer target market, calculate costings and design a marketing campaign. All groups finally had to present a pitch to a team of ‘investors’ who grilled them on their business plans. At the end of the day, parents were invited to the event to listen to their company’s product presentations.

The event was run by Liverpool College’s director of STEM Mrs Doran, and Mrs Hoare, the manager of North West Gifted and Talented. Both were highly impressed by the quality, range and creativity of all the products produced, among which were:

• space saving cupboard door that turns into a desk
• a range of personalised bedroom furniture
• a creative savoury drinks company with flavours such as pizza and lasagne, for those who need to eat on the go.
• a robotic cat called KitKat for those who want a pet without the mess or additional costs

Well done to all the pupils involved. Their creativity and business acumen was indeed impressive.

Journalism Day for Y5 and Y6 More Able Writers

Liverpool College was proud to host an event specifically designed to promote and enhance more advanced writing skills last week. The workshop invited More Able writers from numerous schools from across Liverpool to join Liverpool College’s own budding authors.

The event was led by journalist Mr Gallagher, who works as a columnist for the BBC and whose work has appeared in the Los Angeles Times and The Independent (as well as being a writer for Dr Who dramas). The workshop taught the students how to create and edit newspaper articles, and learn to apply the differences between the writing styles of articles, interviews and features. Pupils explored core skills such as editing, the discipline of deadlines, reliability, verification and why redrafting is required. As luck would have it, our own news story broke that morning when the fire alarms were inexplicably set off. This led to an unexpected evacuation of the school, despite the snowy conditions. The students became instant reporters for the event, interviewing sources to uncover the truth behind the story. The mini journalists were then asked to write their own newspaper articles to report the breaking news story of the day. The participating authors all gained a great deal from the experience.

Our thanks to Mrs Doran for organising the event and to Mr Gallagher for giving us the benefit of his many years as a professional journalist for the BBC.

Dr Who Author visits Liverpool College

On Wednesday, Mr William Gallagher visited Liverpool College to talk to all the students about his careers as a writer. Mr Gallagher is the author of Doctor Who dramas, writing dramas for previous Doctors Colin Baker and Peter Davison. William has also written and shot videos for Radio Times with David Tennant and produced films about Torchwood and Strictly Come Dancing. He has also written for ITV’s Crossroads plus the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and is Deputy chair of the Writers Guild. He is also a journalist.

Mr Gallagher shared his extremely inspirational story with the students: William told a careers teacher at school how he wanted to be a writer and was laughed at, which led to him totally abandoning his dream for nearly 20 years. Mr Gallagher, now a highly accomplished author, has set a personal mission to try to empower students across the country to follow their dreams and to realise that writing can ignite them throughout their lives. Impressively, Mr Gallagher invited any student interested in becoming a writer to come and spend the lunchtime with him so he could advise them on achieving their goal. Our sincere thanks to Mr Gallagher for his highly motivational and inspiration message – Have faith in yourself, follow your passions and never give up on you dreams!

Boarders’ Trip to London

It was a 6am start on Saturday morning when our boarding 6th Form students set out for the 2 hour trip to London Euston for a day’s sight seeing. Ruslana and Yana were very excited to go to the Science Museum and took lots of photos of rocks while Andre, Evgeni, Daniels, Adrian and Tom preferred wider sightseeing, taking in the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Regent’s Park and Oxford Street. Weather-wise, even though the day was less than photo-friendly, a group of 24 tired but satisfied customers arrived back late in the evening ready for a big sleep and an even bigger lie-in on Sunday. Thanks to boarding tutors, Eve and Gary for organising a super trip.
